Resonate: Owain Davies

Artist: Owain Davies

Presenting Partner: Play Office

Location: Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

All three days, 5pm - 9pm

Inspired by queer and inclusive sport, especially rugby, Owain Davies examines how animation can function as a fine art medium. Developing a lexicon of glyphs and symbols, the artist seeks to express experiences that a camera cannot capture. A multi-layered interactive projection explores the memories, identities and sense of belonging of LGBTQ+ sports players.

Part of Memory Library, 14–21 November 2026. Find out more here.

Artist Bio:

I’m a traditional artist, graphic designer, sculptor and animator, working across motion design, 2D, 3D and stop motion. My practice follows a sketch to sculpt to screen pipeline. I begin with drawings and illustrations of people and environments, translating these into physical models using clay and other traditional materials, often exaggerating and characterising their features. I then use photogrammetry to bring these handmade elements into the digital space, where they can be rigged, animated and placed back into hand-built environments.

Thematically, my work is about people. I love representing a wide range of characters and exploring how they interact with their environments and each other. At the heart of my practice is levity and joy. Life can be difficult and stressful, and I believe art, whether through making it or experiencing it, can offer a moment of respite, play and connection.
